Mission:
The Senior Engineer will work under the Engineering Manager to provide technical support across departments and the shop floor. Responsibilities include productivity and process improvements, process automation, tooling and fixture design, and cost reductions. The role also involves maintaining engineering drawing libraries and ensuring proper documentation.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support machine controls and upgrades for manufacturing equipment.
- Provide PLC programming support for manufacturing equipment.
- Design and integrate sensors and data collection systems for manufacturing equipment.
- Develop automation upgrades for manufacturing equipment.
- Design and oversee the fabrication of tooling and fixtures to support production.
- Review production areas annually to identify and eliminate non-value-added activities.
- Maintain a database of all engineering drawings and production machining programs.
- Provide daily engineering support for manufacturing operations.
- Participate in the tooling/design committee.
- Occasionally travel to customer locations to troubleshoot product issues.
- Coordinate with other engineering teams to maintain product drawing databases.
- Conduct meetings to ensure product changes and new products are understood by relevant teams.
- Communicate with engineering personnel to resolve issues related to tooling, designs, and engineering changes.
- Provide technical advice to other departments as needed.
- Assist in driving cultural change towards cross-functional teams and operational excellence.
- Help resolve safety issues at the plant level.
- Assist in developing and maintaining ISO procedures and the plant quality book.
- Plan, direct, coordinate, and monitor engineering activities at the plant level, and brief management on project status.
Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- 2-7 years of related experience.
- Proficient in tooling design, manufacturing systems, and project management.
- CAM programming skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to use precision measurement devices and understand engineering drawings and tolerances.
- Familiarity with CAD systems and proficiency in at least one AutoCAD-compatible system or computer-aided machining program.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Occasional travel required.
- Ability to work necessary hours to complete job tasks, including occasional 50+ hour work weeks.
- Exposure to manufacturing environments with moving mechanical parts and airborne particles.
Preferred Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with PLC and controls.
- Forge die design experience.
- Advanced knowledge of complex surfacing and volumetric calculations for die preforms.
- Mold design experience using CREO design software.
- Problem-solving experience in steel forging.
- Experience using Deform simulation software for complex forge processes.
- Experience with forge surface and energy calculations.
- Experience using FARO CMM for reverse engineering.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
- Office environment with moderate shop exposure.
- Normal office conditions include sitting, telephone work, computer work, and interaction with others.
- Moderate exposure to shop conditions, including noise and airborne particles, with extensive standing and walking.
